This workshop we will be exploring one of the Black originators of jazz dancing Consuela Harris.

A little bit about Consuela Harris:

Consuela Harris was the sensational and considered best of the shake, hot, swinging dancers in the 1930s. Consuela was a New York headliner and the darling of the night club patrons and crowds in the East and West who raved over her charm and artistry. She performed at the famous Sebastian's Cotton Club in California and other New York highlights.

Consuela appeared showing off her dancing talents in two Oscar Micheaux films, "Swing" from 1938 and God's Stepchildren also from 1938. She was also in the movie, "Harlem on the Prairie" with Herb Jeffries.

This workshop is geared towards beginners and will be focused on another late to dance dancer Debbie Reynolds!

Debbie Reynolds is most known for her role in Singing In The Rain alongside Gene Kelley and Donald O’Conner. She also happens to be the mom of actress Carrie Fisher aka Princess Leia of Star Wars fame.

Debbie has had a long and illustrious career in many notable movies and Broadway productions.

We are so excited to be partnering with Sazzy's Lingerie for their 4th annual Lingerie Fashion Show benefitting the dogs and cats of Great Plains SPCA! This is a super fun, LADIES ONLY EVENT. Tickets are $40 a piece, with half of the ticket sales going directly to Great Plains SPCA.

Join the Kansas City Canaries for a new quarterly workshop!

As a team we believe that cost should never be a barrier to dance. That's why these new quarterly workshops will be Pay What You Can at the door.

This workshop we will be getting groovy with some rhythm and blues. We will be exploring one of the Black originators of jazz dancing Miss Mabel Lee.

A little bit about Mabel Lee:

Mabel Lee was an American jazz tap dancer, singer, and entertainer. She began her career as a child prodigy, doing her first performance at the age of 4, and by the time she was 12 years old she was performing at the Top Hat nightclub in Georgia. She moved to New York City with her mother in 1940 to pursue a career as a singer and dancer, and soon joined the chorus of the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Mabel was also known for performing acrobatics with a chair, which was her novelty act!

During World War II, Mabel toured with the USO as a member of their first all-black unit. She travelled and did shows for the Navy, Air Force, and at different camps, as well as performing for wounded veterans after the war in hospitals.

She was known for her dancing in more than 100 soundies in the 1940s, thus becoming known as "Queen of the Soundies". Soundies are three-minute American musical films, each displaying a performance, and are generally thought of as "precursors to music videos. Played on a Panoram similar to a Jukebox".

Fun fact you can see several soundies played on a Panoram at the American Jazz Museum on 18th & Vine!

Wanna be a Kansas City Canary?

We are a modern chorus girl troupe dedicated to preserving the traditions of the chorus girls of the stage and screen. Specializing in solo Charleston, vintage jazz, and chorus line.

Rehearsals take place every Tuesday from 9:00pm - 11:00pm at Dance Fit Flow.

Every Canary pays monthly dues of $40 for rehearsal costs with the exception of when we need additional rehearsals for big gigs.

We are looking for:

Kansas City Canaries is looking for several feminine and fem presenting dancers to the cast of our ambitious, fun, and talented team. We are looking for dancers with a combination of the following talents:

* Dance ability and coordination

* Capacity to learn choreography

* Performance ability and showmanship

* Positive attitude and team culture fit

Audition Process:

Auditions will take place Saturday, January 15th, 1:30pm at Dance Fit Flow.

After you fill out your information sheet and receive your number, you will learn two short pieces of choreography and perform it in groups. Please come prepared to do some solo jazz as we will have everyone perform solo’s to a random jazz song of the Canaries choosing. A lot of our performances are improv based and to live music.

What to wear:

Kansas City Canaries typically perform in 2-inch heels. For your audition please bring comfortable dance heels and wear athletic clothing.

After auditions we will contact each and every dancer who auditions to inform you if you made the team or not. We want to encourage anyone who doesn’t make the team to re-audition.
