The Kansas City Canaries are a modern chorus line dedicated to honoring the legacy of jazz and chorus traditions. We especially uplift the contributions of Black women and other pioneers whose artistry shaped this form and commit to resisting their historic erasure. Our work centers on community, equity, and creating an inclusive space where all dancers are valued and celebrated.

We’ll be starting promptly, so we encourage you to arrive a little early! Please park in the garage, parking validation will be available. Then make your way to the studio to pick up your nametag and bib number, warm up, and get settled before we begin.

During auditions you will also learn 1 of our classic routines.
Please come prepared to do solo jazz / improv to a random jazz song of the Canaries’ choosing as many of our performances are improv based and to live music.
What will I have to do at auditions?

Solo improv - song chosen by us on the spot
Self-choreographed piece - from pre-selected music provided

Rehearsals: Regular Sunday evening rehearsals. Additional rehearsals may be required from time to time, especially in advance of shows/performances. Dancers should arrive on time, prepared, and ready to learn.
Training: Dancers are expected to continue training outside of rehearsals, attend required Canaries workshops, and stay physically active.
Communication: Dancers must use team communication and scheduling platforms and communicate absences or conflicts in advance.
Performances: Dancers are paid for performances. On occasion, we may donate performances to organizations that align with our values.
Team Dues: $40 monthly dues help cover rehearsal space and other team expenses.
Costumes: Dancers purchase some basic costume pieces. All other costume and performance items are provided by the team.
What should you wear to auditions?
For auditions, please wear comfortable athletic or dancewear with hair neatly styled. Bring comfortable short dance heels, as the Kansas City Canaries typically perform in 2-inch character heels. While full costumes aren’t required, adding a touch of stage presence with makeup or styling is encouraged so you feel ready to perform.
